Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
